Four Symptoms of Anxiety

1.30.17

Those who have anxiety in their lives are sometimes triggered by specific events. Other times, it’s just the thought of those events that brings on a wave of nervousness. Anxiety as a whole refers to one or more anxiety disorders. These include among others, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder.

As you can imagine, everyone experiences anxiety differently. Symptoms may vary depending on the type of anxiety disorder you have. However, by understanding your symptoms, you can work to reduce anxiety. Here are four of the most common symptoms.

Upset Stomach/Nausea

One place that anxiety is likely to affect you is your gut. Your stomach may start to churn. You’re likely to feel nauseous. You may feel the need to go to the bathroom or vomit. The nausea may pass on its own or it may persist as long as you feel anxious.

Restlessness

When you’re at your most anxious, you may have a feeling like you’re going to jump out of your skin. You can’t sit still. Your emotions are all over the place. It’s impossible to concentrate on any one task.

Fast Heartbeat/Heart Palpitations

The more you’re worked up, the more your heart is going to pound. That could, in turn, make you feel even more anxious. In some cases, you may experience heart palpitations, where it feels like your heart is beating too fast or skipping necessary beats.

Increased Worry/Stress

A small worry or stressor enters your life and gradually bubbles up until it takes over. You can’t focus on anything but the stress. Your mind races. You may feel dizzy. You may also find it difficult to catch your breath. It may take you a while to calm down.

If you experience these symptoms often, therapy may be able to help with your anxiety challenges. With the aid of a trained professional, you can receive the anxiety support you need to reclaim your life.
