Specialties | Pornography & Sex Addiction

Sexual content is more available than ever before. It can be accessed on smartphones, computers, smart TVs, and tablets. It is almost impossible to go on the internet without being exposed to sexually provocative content. With so much exposure, pornography and sex addiction have grown more and more prevalent. This is hurting relationships and individuals.

What is pornography/sex addiction?

Addiction consists of numerous elements, whether it is a behavioral addiction or a substance addiction. Not everyone that views pornography displays symptoms of addiction. The addicted individual experiences a lack of control in their effort to manage their sexual behavior. Their behavior escalates becoming more intense and/or more risky. They often choose the sexual behavior over family, comfort, freedom, or safety.

Family and friends notice the addicts mood and demeanor change. They are more likely to have mood swings and lash out at those around them. They are secretive and work to put the focus on others instead of themselves. The guilt and shame that results from choosing behaviors inconsistent with your values can erode one’s sense of self-worth, confidence, and empathy.

What to expect from treatment?

Treatment begins with a discussion of patterns of one’s addiction and its impact on relationships. Spouses and partners are encouraged to attend treatment when appropriate. Next, it is important to understand the role of biological elements of the brain impacting addiction.

Throughout the therapeutic process, addicted individuals (and partners) will be taught skills that can enhance your relationship by using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT invites individuals to live a values-centered life by highlighting the things that matter most to them.

They will learn to watch their thoughts and make room for their internal experiences such as thoughts, feelings, sensations, and urges. Individuals and couples will also learn to connect to the present moment (mindfulness training), recognize the Wiser/Observer Self (the you who wants to live a better life), recognize what really matters in your life, and learn to do what it takes to live a value-focused life. This is where the magic begins as a new perspective brings hope and courage to change.
